Small business short-form social media video content creation

In today’s world where information and online content is so readily available, attention spans are becoming shorter than ever.

In this post, I’ll share my thoughts on why I think short-form video shared on social media is such a powerful marketing tool for small business.

The Information Age

We are living in the information age where we have access to information at our fingertips. That ready access to instant information means that the way that people are consuming information is also changing.

Younger generations (Gen Z and younger Millennials) typically don’t use legacy information sources such as newspapers or TV to stay up to date. Rather, they turn to social media platforms such as TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube or podcasts to stay informed.

Individual creators strongly influence audiences today. This is in contrast to listening to or trusting the opinions of media or corporate organisations. If a content creator has a view about a topic, this can have an enormous impact on their followers.

Information Overload

People today want instant access to information. The shear volume of information that is available is a contributing factor to ever decreasing attention spans.

People today quickly filter out anything that doesn’t seem immediately interesting or relevant. From a marketing perspective, that means you’ve literally got seconds to make an impression before people move on. In addition to this, social media platforms run algorithms that serve up short, curated content to keep people scrolling.

We mostly view the content on mobile phones. We do this when we have a spare moment and move quickly from one piece of content to the next if it doesn’t catch our eye immediately.

Why Use Short-Form Video

While well-taken photos can be beautiful, videos move and are dynamic. The storytelling capability and entertainment aspect of video content is what hooks viewers in those crucial first seconds.

Short videos let you show the personality of your business and your staff. Storylines are unlimited and can include topics like behind-the-scenes clips, staff intros, quick how-tos, or product highlights.

People buy from people, not faceless brands. Video makes your business feel more real, more human, and more trustworthy.

Video content consistently outperforms static posts in engagement. According to TikTok for Business, short-form video drives higher engagement and recall rates than static posts. More likes, shares, saves, and comments mean the platform is more likely to push your content to new audiences. That adds up to valuable free exposure.

Why Short-Form Video is Cost Effective

Social Media Research in 2025 shows that 57% of consumers (particularly Gen Z) prefer short-form videos when researching products or services. Short-form videos receive 2.5 times more engagement than long-form videos. 31% of the people surveyed reported that short-form videos offer the highest return on investment compared to other content formats.

The research also shows that short-form interactive videos can increase sales and conversions. 55% of consumers watch videos before making a purchase decision, indicating the persuasive power of video content.

Short-form videos are not only engaging but also cost-effective, with a good return on investment. They are relatively easy and quick to produce, making them accessible for small businesses with limited resources.

Social Media Strategy

Short, fast moving, entertaining content is what captures attention today. Short-form videos are no longer considered a trend but form the basis of a solid business marketing strategy.

If you’re a small business still relying on low engagement social media, it might be time to rethink your marketing strategy. You may be leaving a lot of potential reach and engagement on the table.
